In 1780, when Birmingham was little more than a village bearing scant resemblance to the modern industrial second city of the United Kingdom that it is today, Mr. Hiat (with one ‘t’) formed his business manufacturing “Prisoners’ Handcuffs to the Trade”. This was the era of the British Colonial Empire and, by the early l9th century, his products were used extensively throughout the countries under British influence.
During this period, the first British police force was formed, colloquially known as “The Peelers”. Over the years this has evolved into the Metropolitan police force of Greater London. Hiatt’s (the company), supplied “The Peelers” with their first handcuffs and have proudly maintained this relationship to the present day.

Whilst the basic principles of handcuffing have not materially altered, designs have changed dramatically to cope with the ever increasing violent criminals. Assaults on police officers and drug related violence have steadily grown in recent years, requiring handcuffs that can be applied with speed and confidence to minimise the risk of injury to both the law enforcement officer and the criminal.
Hiatt’s ongoing communication with police forces throughout the world, allied to its specialist knowledge of restraint equipment gained from more than 200 years experience, has ensured that its modern range of “Snap-On” handcuffs fulfil these requirements. Hiatt’s range is the most comprehensive of any handcuff manufacturer in the world today. The range encompasses CHAIN STYLE, TRI-HINGE, SPEEDCUFFS (rigid handcuffs) and the ULTIMATE HANDCUFF which is the world’s only folding rigid handcuff, and all possess Hiatt’s unique backloading feature for speedcuffing techniques. All steel based models comply with and exceed the rigorous strength and quality standards as laid down by the United States National Institute of Justice and which have been adopted by the United Kingdom Home Office.

To supplement it’s product range, Hiatt’s instructional training video for SPEEDCUFF and the ULTIMATE HANDCUFF has been produced for use by professional law enforcement agencies who wish to improve their understanding of handcuffs and their applications.
